The inaugural ‘Waddling for a Week’ – May 2011

The inaugaral ‘Waddling for a Week’ campaign took place from 23rd to 28th May 2011.

To generate awareness for the Penguin Promises initiative, Hayley and Gabby (Committee members of Animal Keepers Association Africa – AKAA), along with 5 other Animal Keepers and 1 support vehicle, walked just over 130kms.  Their starting point was Gansbaai. Just off Gansbaai lies Dyer Island, where there is a penguin colony.  The week took them through the coastal towns of (among others) Hermanus, Kleinmond, Bettys bay, Pringle bay, Gordons Bay(in Strand), Muizenberg, and to their end point at another penguin colony – SanParks Boulders Beach in Simonstown.

Their hope that public would join them for short distances along the way was ovewhelmly realised.  On the last 15km leg to Boulders they were accompanied by 50+ waddling promisers despite the rainy weather.  The media coverage and social networking around the event was awe inspiring.

We invite you to experience the events as they unfolded by starting at page 1 in the main body of the site.

People can send their promises via the website, facebooktwitter or sms to 34008 – keyword “Penguin (followed by your promise)“. sms charged @ R2
